Are you looking for a way to take your backyard from drab to fab? Then a pergola is just what you need. A pergola is basically an outdoor shelter or structure with columns or posts and an open roof.  It adds a focal point, beauty and character to your property. It brings the WOW factor to your backyard.

When it comes to pergolas there are a variety of color options available. The material looks like natural wood but won’t chip, peel, split or warp. Attach it to your house or have it be free-standing in your yard and most importantly, make it yours.

Here are some ideas of what you can do with your pergola:

Grow vines and climbing plants around the beams and roof.

Highlight a section of garden or walkway.

Make it a relaxed seating area or summer reading spot.

Add ambiance with cafe lights.

Add a gas fire pit and some chairs and make it your smores destination.

Improving outdoor living space is currently one of the hottest trends in home improvement. To learn more about pergolas visit Cool Covers online at, e-mail, or call (801) 396-2419.

Cool Covers will be at the Layton Home Show on March 30th and 31st at the Davis Conference Center.

We hope you’ve all been enjoying your summer, vacations, and holidays!

As the summer winds down and parents get ready to send their kids back to school, we’d like to share just a little bit of feedback we’ve had about our patio covers and the difference they’ve made in people’s lives.

Customers come in all the time just to remind us how much they love their patio covers! Especially this time of year, when folks have had a chance to enjoy new patio covers installed during the summer, we hear a lot from happy customers.

For example, here are comments letter we received a few weeks ago:

Job Well Done!

“Last month, Brian and Jayce installed a gorgeous patio cover over our deck on the south side of the house. It’s something I’ve wanted for 15 years, and we couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out.”

“From start to finish, your company is very professional and delivered as promised. The installation was very professional, and we really liked getting to know Brian and Jayce. They were personable and fun to be around. They went above and beyond in every way.”

-Scott & Melanie

Here are some more comments we’ve received recently:

“Excellent service, job well done & a very nice guy!”

“They did a great job, and they were very patient with me and all my questions. I am very happy with it.”

Not only are people happy with our service, they often tell us around this time of year that the patio covers they had installed earlier in the summer have meant a real improvement to their lives.

Often, they tell us they wish they’d had a patio cover installed sooner because of how much they’ve enjoyed having a covered outdoor space as an extension of their homes.

Whether you’re currently enjoying a patio cover or you’re looking them up for the first time, we at Cool Covers would like to wish you a happy and healthy start to the school year

You may have missed out on getting a new patio cover installed in time for July 4, but if you’re planning for your July 24 celebrations, it’s not too late!

At Cool Covers, we’re still taking calls for July installations at (801) 396-2419.

People who get new patio covers installed in the summertime often tell us that they’ve changed the whole comfort level and atmosphere of their Independence Day and Pioneer Day gatherings with family and friends.

One reason they love our steel patio covers is that it’s safe and convenient to barbecue underneath them – whether the weather you’re contending with this July is sun, rain, or snow.

(Lately it seems like you never can tell with the weather in Utah!)

If it’s sunny and hot outside, a patio cover offers shade while still allowing smoke to escape up into the air, providing a cooking space that’s much more comfortable for you.

It also makes it easier for your guests to relax and enjoy your company while you’re preparing the meal – and for you to sit down and talk with them in a nice, inviting environment while keeping an eye on the grill.

If it’s raining or snowing, a patio cover will enable you to keep the grill going anyway – meaning even if the fireworks and the rodeo get snowed out, you’ll still be able to feed your guests well while the kids re-enact crossing the prairie in adverse weather conditions, as many early pioneers did.

To find out more about the joys of owning a patio cover, you can check out Cool Covers online at, e-mail, or call us at (801) 396-2419.

Also, please note: If you’re a qualified patio cover installer, we can always use a little extra help this time of year, so give us a shout!

Looking back on ten years as a small business here in Ogden, it’s amazing to see how much progress you can make in a decade.

“We were working out of our house when we first started,” says Elka Wallace, co-owner of Cool Covers with her husband, Scott.

“Now we own a building and an actual business, and we have people that come in all the time…just to sit there and talk to us about their products and what they’re doing, and we’ve become real good friends with a lot of people because of that.”

Cool Covers, which primarily sells patio covers, started in 2007; Scott Wallace already had more than 20 years of experience selling patio covers when he and Elka decided to go into business for themselves.

They worked out of their home at first, then a storage shed, and then the building that now serves as their shop.

Today they’re still doing what they did then – visiting homes for estimates and installations of their custom-measured product – but now they have 8 employees to help them keep up.

Based in Ogden, they serve customers from North Salt Lake to Logan and the surrounding area.

For Scott, patio covers – and the way they can improve people’s quality of life – has always been a passion.

“He is so sweet and so genuine and so honest about it. He won’t sell people stuff that they really don’t need to spend money on,” Elka says.

Ten years later, they can see their impact in the many happy customers and longtime friends who they’ve met just by doing what they do.

“It’s nice to know that just some simple patio cover can bring so many people together,” she says.

If you love being outdoors but don’t love contending with the sun, rain, and snow, listen up! There is a way to make your patio more comfortable and usable year-round.

Permanent patio covers are a home-improvement trend that’s gaining popularity in Utah as a means to make outdoor spaces more livable.

A solid, steel patio cover is something that’s built onto your house, a fixed structure that turns that patio into an outdoor room.

Though it’s custom made, the price is a lot less than you’d think – especially for the value it can add in comfort to your everyday life.

“If it’s snowing outside, you can still walk outside and sit under your patio cover,” says Elka Wallace, who owns Ogden-based Cool Covers with her husband, Scott. “If you like to barbecue in the winter, it’s perfect.”

In the summer, a cover shades the patio from the blazing sun – and, with roller shades that can be installed to drop down from the patio edges, it can provide extra protection from the sun.

And not only does the patio cover protect you from the elements, it also protects your patio furniture – meaning there’s no longer a need to find a place to store the furniture in the winter.

It’s a great way to enjoy your patio all year long!

Cool Covers sells other outdoor living products as well, but patio covers have been the mainstay of their business for the last decade.

Elka says that’s because they truly impact quality of life, allowing people to rediscover their backyard patios as outdoor rooms that can be enjoyed all year – regardless of the weather.

If you’re a homeowner, you may be devoting time to the outside of your home, preparing before the first frost hits.  There’s a lot to consider for those of you with an outdoor patio, just take a peek at tips like these that can help keep everything ready and waiting for the warmer weather.

  1. Clean and store your patio furniture.    Give your furniture a good cleaning so it’s not sitting in grime for the next 6 months and make sure it dries completely before storing.
  2. Store garden tools, accessories and bring your potted plants inside.
  3. Clean your grill.  Who wants to start the bar-b-que season off with last summers left over chicken?  Add lifetime to your purchase and
  4. Add cover. If your patio is lacking a covered space that will allow you to enjoy your outdoor space year round, now is a perfect time.  With options that offer both enclosed or lattice style, it not only will add value to your home, but can offer a low maintenance, durable and custom designed space.
  5. Remove stains and debris from your space.  It’s the daunting task that no one likes to do, but investing in a good cleaning substance (which will vary based on what your outdoor space is made of) and giving your space a good washing will help with stains and debris so that they don’t become ingrained.  It will also allow you to inspect and repair any weak spots.

Don’t forget about your awning!  Awnings give great energy savings and reduce solar heat in the warmer months so it is important to care for them.  Using a soft bristled brush, mild soap and a bucket of water, start from the top and work your way down to remove any dirt, leaves, or debris.  Allow your awning to dry completely before storing otherwise your just promoting mildew and mold growth.
